Gentlemen and Ladies of the Old Boys Fraternity of The Doon School

Hello.

For those of you who cannot be present at the DSOBS interhouse soccer tournament in Delhi, let me share some of the details with you. Please note, this is not an 'official' communique from the DSOBS - its more like a postcard from Delhi. I'm sure a full report and accurate statistics will follow a missive from the Secratariat or Rosebowl.

I can happily report from the sidelines here in Delhi (as I was not asked to otherwise demonstrate my mad-skills on the pitch) and give you some details as I remember them from the first day of play. Needless to say it has been a superb tournament so far at Plaza Farms, Sultanpur and there's some electric action lined up for tomorrow - the final day of play.

Weather:

The hot and muggy conditions of Delhi prevailed for most of the day meaning that anyone who was out of doors looked like they'd just bathed with all their clothes on. Thankfully, some light relief from the clouds was on the cards as we were drizzled upon from high, for the evening half of the games. The light shower was not enough to stop gameplay or enthusiasm levels.

Play:

Organisers were quick to kick off with the games after brief opening speeches and a quick run down of the rules of play. Matches were played from 6.30pm to 10pm with two matches being played side-by-side at Plaza Farms. A good crowd turned up, with most attendees ready to get onto the pitch to support their houses, clad in shinguards and full soccer kit. And some brave wives also came out to cheer on their husbands and stand up to the Dosco battlions that had gathered to celebrate the sport of the leather orb. Much enthusiasm was shown by all.

Second - the guys have taken the tournament pretty seriously with organisers Prithvi Gill, Anandbir Brar, Nalin Khanna and Nalin Sayal having gone to some considerable length to organise rules, referees and refreshments while promising some incredible football action from the captains and their sides. For those of you who missed it, the fresh kathi rolls and Kingfisher just off pitch were a pretty awesome highlight of the organisation too. Much applause is to be expended.

The lowdown:

The talk on the sidelines has been that Jaipur, Tata and Hyderabad are fielding some serious talent with major contentions for the prize, while Oberoi and Kashmir are putting up some sterling teams for each showdown. All teams are demonstrating a high level of football skill. Jaipur won all their games so they're close to bagging a final spot on Sunday's muqabala. Tata and Hyderabad are looking to mix things up for them.

Hard fought games all around and notable sportsmanship to be applauded. The chaps have literally gone that extra mile and beyond in terms of dedication and commitment to the DSOBS Inter-house Football Competition - 2010.

Here are the results. I wish we had a videographer - some of the gameplay and goals have been truly spectacular.

O-H - 3-0 to Hyderabad

T-K - 4-1 to Tata

T-H - 4-3 to Tata

O-J - 4-1 to Jaipur

K-J - 2-1 to Jaipur (have to verify)

T-J - 1-0 to Jaipur

Gear including shorts, shoes and jerseys have been sponsored by Nike so there's been some awesome kit up for grabs for the team members who turned up for practice and played for their houses through the past couple of months. To those of you who didn't try out - baaad luck. Try next year. The players received jerseys customised with their house's colour and the DS-75 logo, and a pair of classic Nike soccer boots for away games. Fortis was also on hand as a sponsor to dish out medical care for those needing bunking chits.

DS-75 Rosebowl issue - your anecdotes wanted

The Rosebowl Editorial team are putting together a bunch of stories to make the issue come to life for DS-75.  If you have any great stories and would like to contribute, please read the following.

Request for material for the DS-75 Publication-‘School’



As part of The Doon School’s 75th year celebrations acronymed DS-75, the Doon School Old Boys’ Society is bringing out a book titled ‘School’.



The book will tell ‘School’s’ story from its inception in 1935 to the present day through a collection of anecdotes, letters, articles and photographs. The attempt is to capture the Dosco spirit and ethos and what goes into producing a well educated, responsible Dosco and include:



The building of character (also the humourous side of it).

Nurturing the free spirit and lateral thinking of the Dosco.

The commitment to larger social issues by working with the disadvantaged.

The boys’ striving for excellence in whatever field or career they choose, with a reference to show how School inspired/played a part in their successes.

The participation in games and emphasis on a diversity of extra-curricular activities ranging from fine arts to mountaineering.

The exposure to the outdoors (7 day mid terms, etc...)

Humour and grit in the face of adversity.

The changing nature of education, which earlier, in The Doon School, was to meet the needs of the young nation. Today, when statistics indicate that young Indians are at least 17% of the world’s population, it is essential we bring in a global perspective to education.

We need a sense of social belonging on a global scale to address critical issues of pollution, global warming and the west’s carbon footprint. The world today is a global village and our country’s political boundaries and personal wealth will not isolate us from impending worldwide climatic disaster.

Anecdotes

Articles/essays

Letters

Photographs (in school and away on Mid Terms, etc)



These should reflect the above and:



We are looking for constructive criticism as well, constructive articles that are not all “Ra Ra Dosco” but look to discuss/address the problems faced by a schoolboy, are welcome.

Please date and annotate all material you send. We would appreciate all material ‘as is’ or scanned onto CD; all material received would be scanned and stored in the school Archives.

Dubai-Delhi Do or Die Golf Face Off - November 2009

Just when you thought it couldn't get any fiercer, the competitive spirit between Dubai and Delhi Doscos has reached boiling point!

The Desert Dwellers and Mughal Mavens have decided to face-off in that time tested tradition of all out danger and risky blood-and-guts gauntlet throwing - golf! Best bring health insurance!

If you're man enough to face up to the challenge from the high-handed Delhi batallion, send in your names and handicaps to Bipin Bhatia at bbhatia@enoc.com. Do Dubai Doscos proud!

Tentative dates are November 20th and 21st. The boys are looking to make the fixture an annual event so let's make it a success.

Here's the official mail from Bipin:

'During the last visit of the DSOBS delegation from India, it was proposed to introduce a Dubai Vs Delhi golf tournament that will be held each year and will alternate between the two locations. To kick off, it has been agreed that the first tournament will be held in Dubai and the tentative dates are November 20th and 21st , as the tournament will be played over two rounds of Golf.'

Does anyone want to sponsor the trophy and tie-in some corporate goodwill? Come on. Extra bulls and bun tikkis for you.
